Lançamento Album
É com grande prazer que anunciamos o lançamento do aguardado álbum de estreia dos Spank Lord, “Bombs Away!”, no dia 21 de Maio na Galeria de Arte/ Bar Arco 8 em Ponta Delgada. Passaram quase dois anos desde que iniciamos as gravações. Foi uma longa viagem que nos deu imenso trabalho, precisou de nós muita dedicação e contamos com a participação de várias pessoas talentosas, que nos orgulhamos de chamar de amigos. Neste comunicado de imprensa, iremos fazer uma breve visita guiada a todo este trabalho de produção do disco.
O álbum:
Começando pelo trabalho de estúdio, decidimos gravar no Spell Productions Studios e com o seu proprietário, Miguel Santos. Não só pela sua reconhecida dedicação e conhecimentos, mas sobretudo por nos permitir passar de um plano profissional para a segurança de trabalhar com um amigo e de nos sentirmos “em casa”. Depois de todas as gravações estarem concluídas, começamos a trabalhar a sonoridade final do álbum. Escolhemos timbres específicos para a bateria de forma que soasse diferente em alguns temas, mantendo contudo consistência ao longo das 13 faixas que compõem o álbum. Depois foram as guitarras. Perdemos vários dias na procura da sonoridade correcta, experimentando vários tipos de amplificadores, desde equipamento mais antigos e vintage até amplificadores mais modernos, tudo de forma a que conseguíssemos o timbre perfeito. As guitarras foram desde o início a nossa maior preocupação, pois pretendíamos um som pesado e poderoso, quer nos ritmos, quer nos solos. Ficamos muito satisfeitos com o resultado final. Por fim, o baixo. Em Spank Lord, o baixo não é apenas mais um instrumento, de modo que prestamos um especial cuidado na forma como havia de soar, quer nos sons limpos, quer nos distorcidos. Pode sentir-se o baixo a guiar um tema e ao mesmo tempo a fundir-se com a canção, umas vezes mais brilhante, outras vezes mais suave e com distorção. Assim, os amantes de hard rock encontrarão neste álbum tudo o que gostam. Há agressividade, melodia e solos bombásticos a cair como bombas! Há canções festivas, outras mais “a abrir” e melódicas e sempre com a atitude do rock n’ roll bem presente.
No início não tínhamos nenhum conceito subjacente para este álbum, mas durante o seu desenvolvimento começamos a imaginar um mundo imaginário à sua volta. Concebemos uma realidade alternativa num mundo pós-apocalíptico, com aviões da II Guerra Mundial, bombas, explosões, raparigas com armas, aberrações e rock n’ roll. Todas estas ideias convergiram ao longo do caminho e é isto que pretendemos demonstrar no grafismo e nas letras.
E isto leva-nos para o trabalho gráfico. A capa e o design do disco foram concebidos por Michal Hunik, um talentoso artista freelancer da Polónia. Ele foi um dos 73 artistas (após anúncio colocado na internet) que se mostraram disponíveis para nos ajudarem a criar esta nossa realidade alternativa. Após vermos o trabalho dele, vimos logo que não precisávamos de procurar outro artista. O Michal compreendeu a nossa visão e tornou-a realidade. Foram também dele as ideias principais e cooperou connosco em outros trabalhos gráficos que acompanharão a promoção deste álbum.
Luís Ferreira foi também o homem por detrás do leme deste barco e do vídeo do single “Dynamite”. O Luís trabalhou incansavelmente connosco e é responsável por vários designs da banda, tais como o website, myspace, fotos, entre outras coisas. Foi ele o responsável pela composição do grafismo do booklet que acompanha o disco.
Se o Luís foi o piloto do barco, Rui Couto foi o co-piloto. O Rui foi o responsável pelo “Departamento de Multimedia”, mais especificamente, o editor e o produtor do vídeo do tema “Dynamite” juntamente com o Luís.
Nada disto teria sido concluído também sem a preciosa ajuda de Diogo Lima, que nos deu uma grande ajuda na captura das imagens para o vídeo.
Regressando ao álbum, trata-se de um disco com 13 faixas e é disponibilizado no formato jewel case com um livrete de 16 páginas. Os temas que compõem o disco são:

It’s with a great pleasure that we announce the release of the awaited Spank Lord's debut album “Bombs Away!” on the 21st of May in the art gallery/bar Arco 8 in Ponta Delgada. It's been almost 2 years since we started to record it. It was a long run and it took some serious hard work, dedication, and the involvement of several talented people which we proudly call friends. In this press release, we will walk you through the making of this album.
The album:
Starting with the studio work, as previously announced, we choose to work with Spell Productions Studios's owner, Miguel Santos not only for his dedication and knowledge, but mainly because we needed to go beyond the professional work line and feel the secure working with a friend, the need to work at “home”. After the whole recordings were done, we started working on what it would sound like. We worked on specific drums tones, sounding different at several songs, still maintaining the same style towards the whole record. Then you have the guitars. We lost a few days searching for the right guitar tones, going through old and new amplifier types to get a heavy, still loose, sometimes crunchy, dry, sometimes smooth heavy sound. Since the start, guitars were the main concern. We wanted them heavy, loud, leading and powerful. We were very pleased with the results. Last but not least, the bass. For us, the bass lines in our songs have a major role. It took us special attention towards the tone set for this, on cleans and on the distorted bass lines. You can feel the bass leading independently and at the same time merging with the rest, sometimes brighter, others smoother and with distortion. So you can expect all that you love in hard rock in this album. You have the aggressive, the smoother, and the melodic lines, solos climbing through the roof and coming down like bombs. You have party songs, aggressive songs, melodic songs and the “I don't care” rock attitude in this package.
At the start we had no linear concept for this album, but during its development we started to imagine a fictional world around it. We envisioned an alternate reality in a post-apocalyptic stage with World War II airplanes (which drives us), bombs, explosions and rock and roll girls with guns. All things just merged along the way and it’s exactly what we wanted to represent with the artwork, lyrics and stuff. It grown by itself.
The concept of it led us to the artwork. The album cover and booklet drawings were made by Michal Hunik, a talented freelance artist from Poland. He was one of the 73 artists who applied for this job, and when we saw his works, we had no need to look any further. Michal awesomely captured our vision and made it real. He also came up with some of the major ideas on this and cooperated on other art-related works for us.
Our big friend Luis Ferreira was the man behind the wheel in the design departament and he also directed the video for the single “Dynamite”. Luis has been working around the clock with us and he is also responsible for all the other Spank Lord designs, such as the website, Myspace and photos. He also led the album design composition and detail adjustments.
Side by side with Luis, Rui Couto has been working on our multimedia aspects and he edited and the video “Dynamite” along with Luís. Nothing of this would be accomplished without his professionalism. Last but not the least, Diogo Lima helped us alot in the filming of “Dynamite”. Diogo and Luís both captured the footage.
Coming back to the album, it’s a 13 track audio CD built in the classic jewel case with a 16 page booklet. We now announce it's the track list:
